Here, we are looking at bamboo jersey; a fabric, which, on paper, seems to have it all but, when you delve a little deeper, brings up a whole host of factors, which you might never have realised. Not the exact\ntype that pandas munch on, the bamboo used for fabric is called Moso Bamboo.\nThis plant can be used to create a variety of textiles, thanks to its fibres.\nThere is a lot of discussion, disagreements, and opinions about using bamboo as\na fabric and we want to consider these in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Why bamboo?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Theoretically, the use of bamboo to make fabric is great.\nBamboo has some brilliant qualities, which makes it super popular for\nactivewear, yoga and pilates clothing and other fashion. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Antibacterial \u2013 so your clothes won\u2019t get smelly after a workout!<\/li><li>Breathable<\/li><li>Strong<\/li><li>Versatile<\/li><li>Super soft<\/li><li>Comfortable<\/li><li>Lightweight<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The type of bamboo, which is used to make textiles, is also a hardy and super-fast growing plant, with the ability to grow up to 4 feet in a single day! This makes bamboo one of the most easily renewed natural resources in the world. Not only that, it requires far less water and care than cotton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bamboo-viscose-1024x1024-e1573560962944-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"bamboo fibres\" class=\"wp-image-845\" width=\"525\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bamboo-viscose-1024x1024-e1573560962944.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bamboo-viscose-1024x1024-e1573560962944-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bamboo-viscose-1024x1024-e1573560962944-768x393.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Bamboo or organic cotton?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although very different fabrics, one of the main\nsimilarities between bamboo fabric and organic cotton is that no chemicals,\nfertilizers, or nasty pesticides are used to grow the crops. Bamboo is a hardy\nplant, and has a natural resistance to pests, so it does not need to be\nprotected from them to flourish and by not using chemicals to help organic\ncotton grow, cultivators are improving the quality of the land, helping prevent\nwater contamination and conserving biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main advantages of bamboo over organic cotton are during\nthe growing of the crop. From water and soil management to the effects on the\nenvironment and atmosphere. As mentioned before, bamboo requires very little\nwater whereas cotton is one of the thirstiest crops around. To grow cotton,\nextensive irrigation is required, which, of course, can have a negative impact\non the use of water in the areas where cotton is grown. However, this is also\nchanging and now 80% of organic production is rain fed, rather than irrigated,\nmeaning organic cotton preserves groundwater stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cotton also needs to be replanted every year, which leads to\nploughing and soil erosion, whereas bamboo grows, effectively, like grass. It\nhas a huge root system underground, and new shoots spring up after every\nharvest, meaning no additional planting or cultivation is required, which\nprevents erosion of the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bamboo also contains a much higher amount of biomass per\nacre than cotton, thus it converts a larger amount of carbon-dioxide to oxygen,\nmaking it one of the most efficient plants for this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep, from the looks of things, bamboo, the plant, is a bit of an A-lister really and there is no doubt that it is a very green plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Dot_bamboo.jpg\" alt=\"bamboo\" class=\"wp-image-846\" width=\"505\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Dot_bamboo.jpg 640w, https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Dot_bamboo-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Is bamboo fabric sustainable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Soft, smooth and flowing, with a drape to die for and a\nglowing sheen. Bamboo fabric has a lot of the qualities that other luxury\nfabrics, such as silk and cashmere, have, but at a much more affordable price.\nSo, what is the catch? As we have seen from the above, bamboo the plant is\nwonderfully sustainable, one of the fastest growing plants and most\neco-friendly plants around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, bamboo the fabric, or bamboo rayon, is slightly\nmore controversial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real question is, how is bamboo made into fabric? This is the question, which turns this natural resource from a wonder plant to something possibly a lot more sinister. While there are no chemicals added to the environment through the farming of bamboo, when it comes to processing the crop into a fibre, chemical manufacturing is abundant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/640px-Bamboo_forest_Taiwan.jpg\" alt=\"bamboo forest\" class=\"wp-image-852\" width=\"514\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/640px-Bamboo_forest_Taiwan.jpg 640w, https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/640px-Bamboo_forest_Taiwan-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 2 methods of creating bamboo fibre to make bamboo\nfabric; mechanically or chemically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>The mechanical method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the more eco-conscious method. This is done by\ncrushing the woody parts of the bamboo and then use natural enzymes to break it\nup into a mushy mass. Then, the natural fibres of the plant can be mechanically\ndrawn out and then spun to make yarn. This is essentially the same process,\nwhich is used to make linen fabric from hemp or flax. This kind of material is\noften referred to as bamboo linen. However, very little bamboo linen is\nproduced because it is very labour intensive and expensive and, as we discovered,\nvery tricky and temperamental to print on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This brings us to the second method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>The chemical method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is where the controversy lies. The chemical method is\nhow bamboo goes from a plant to a soft, beautiful fabric. It must undergo\ntreatment using some harsh and toxic chemicals to be made into a wearable\nfibre. The result of this treatment turns the bamboo into a fibre like Rayon,\nwhich is a fibre than can be made from the cellulose of any plant or tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many chemicals are used in this method, including caustic\nsoda, toxic bleaching agents such as chlorine, carbon disulfide, and sulfuric\nacid. They are used to \u201ccook\u201d the bamboo leaves and woody shoots. These\nchemicals can produce an environmentally hazardous chemical cocktail, which\nfilters into the environment and can be abandoned into waterways or landfills.\nEven scarier, both sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide have been linked to\nserious health problems, which is an issue for the workers in the factories who\ncreate the fabric and the surrounding wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The method to create this bamboo fabric cannot be considered sustainable or eco-friendly, due to the hazardous chemicals and dangers to the environment, and the workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rayon2-e1565867294531.jpg\" alt=\"factory\" class=\"wp-image-167\" width=\"572\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rayon2-e1565867294531.jpg 825w, https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rayon2-e1565867294531-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/au.contrado.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rayon2-e1565867294531-768x366.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Is wearing chemically processed bamboo bad for your health?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing of bamboo is eco-friendly but the manufacturing\nof bamboo into a wearable fabric raises a huge amount of environmental and\nhealth concerns, because of the harsh and often toxic chemicals used to cook\nthe bamboo; which will eventually make the bamboo cellulose fibre, which is\nused to make clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of the chemicals used are harmful to the body \u2013 certainly when producing it, but what about for wearing it? It has been said that by wearing rayon, you could be exposing yourself to issues such as nausea, headaches, vomiting, muscle pain and insomnia, to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What is the bamboo bottom line?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a source of material, bamboo just can\u2019t be beaten for the\nmost efficient in terms of use of land, water management, speed and ease of\ngrowth and all-round sustainability. However, it seems that bamboo, the fabric,\nleaves a lot to be desired and the on-going argument about its environmental\nimpact, method of production and use of chemicals in this process is one, which\nwill continue in the fabric and textile worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the textile industry strives to create more eco-conscious and green methods to produce sustainable bamboo fabrics, they must be encouraged to do so, as bamboo clothing and fabric has such amazing potential as an environmentally friendly product.
