Clan Stewart of Appin has a rich and significant history rooted in the Highlands of Scotland. The clan descends from Sir John Stewart, the son of Alexander, High Steward of Scotland. One of Sir John's descendants acquired the Lordship of Lorn through marriage to the Lorn heiress. Sir John Stewart of Lorn was murdered around 1463, and his son became the first Stewart of Appin. They fought at the Battle of Flodden in 1513 and the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, with notable participation from Donald Stewart. In 1645, the clan fought at the Battle of Inverallochy, Auldearn and Kilsyth in the same year. Despite their chief being outlawed, and their lands forfeited, they were restored at the Restoration.
