About Your Tangram

The tangram is an old dissection puzzle that originates from China, and is thought of as the earliest psychological test. Today, it's used as a fun educational puzzle as well as in mathematics. 7 shapes with specific dimensions fit together to form a perfect square, and are then rearranged in various ways to form the outlines of popular shapes, like a cat, dog, house, bird, candle, boat etc. Your bespoke tangram comes in 2 sizes and can be printed on one or both sides.

How to Make a Tangram Puzzle

When it comes to how to make the tangram puzzle, the mechanics of this ancient game is necessary. Yours is handmade in our studios using durable 5mm thick felt cut into 7 specific shapes. The idea is that all all the shapes can be arranged to form a perfect square, so the measurements need to be precise. Your design is permanently printed using a specialist technique that fuses the ink deep into the fibres, ensuring the images don't fade, peel away or scratch off. Once the felt has been printed and cut, they're presented in a fabric drawstring pouch, enabling you to keep your tangram shapes together.

Care Instructions

Your tangram is made from soft but durable 5mm thick felt, and can easily be surface wiped clean. Do not put in the washing machine.

  • Wipe Down
  • No Soak

Design Tips

Within the design interface, you'll be able to see exactly where we cut the felt fabric, should you want to position elements of your design in specific places. The nature of a tangram is to rearrange the pieces in various different formats, so the position of your design shouldn't be too much of a concern. There's also the option to print on both sides, which is ideal if you have a design brand and need to include business details and your contact information. You could also print two very distinct designs to switch things up and create a different look.

Frequently asked questions:

What is a tangram?

A tangram is an ancient Chinese dissection puzzle, whereby you move the 7 'tan' shapes to form the outline/silhouette of a single shape, like a dog, rabbit or boat, without the shapes overlapping.

What age range is this suitable for?

The custom tangram is suitable for all ages, and can be used to help cognitive functions such as spatial and visual problem solving. Due to the loose fabric pieces, we don't recommend for small children.

How many shapes can I make?

The opportunities are probably endless, however there's many classic shapes such as the shoe, cat, boat, rocket, dog, human, candle, chair, swan, tree, horse, fish, rabbit, house. snake, frog, teapot and more.

Print Guideline

  • DPI-Print Guideline Icon

What's the best resolution to print in?

We print at 200dpi, which is a good combination of quality and file weight. Ideally, your image should be scaled to 100% at 200dpi, this means that no resizing of your file occurs stopping any interpolation.

  • Jpeg-Tiff Print Guideline Icon

Should I save my file as a TIFF or JPEG?

For multi-coloured or very detailed files we recommend using a tiff format, but they must be flattened. For simple colours and low detail files, a jpeg is fine.

  • RGB-CMYK Print Guideline Icon

Which colour model should I choose? RGB or CMYK?

If each individual colour is specifically important to your design, choose CYMK as our setup will print each colour with the closest possible match within our available range. If the relationship between the colours within the image is more important then choose RGB, this will reduce all colours equally to fit within our range.

  • GSM ICON

    What does GSM mean?

Grams per Square Meter (GSM) is an international standard for measuring the weight of paper or fabric. GSM uses the weight of a square meter (1000 x 1000mm) as an indication of the weight and thickness of a given fabric. We class 20-100gsm as light (summer fabrics, gauzes and fine silks), 101-249 gsm as medium (most clothing fabrics) and 250+ gsm as heavy (upholstery fabrics, and other specialist fabrics).

  • Fill Bleed Areas ICON

    What are bleed areas?

When designing your product, it’s best to make sure that your image is slightly larger than needed. In printing, the extra printed image is referred to as a “Bleed Area” or margin, and it is removed from the finished piece. A bleed area acts as a buffer for slight inconsistencies in the manufacturing process. however, it’s important to fill your bleed areas completely, or you may end up with white, unprinted strips along the edge of your finished product.

  • Transfer-Print Guideline Icon

Do you print on garments a customer supplies?

Unfortunately not. All our garments are printed on flat fabric and sewn into finished products, which gives a better-finished result and all-over print. We test meticulously so that we know what gets the best results on our fabrics, and our facilities cater perfectly to them. We do however print sublimation paper to order, so if you have access to a heat press you can press your fabrics or flat garments easily.

  • Pattern Alignment Across Seams ICON

Can you Align a Pattern or design across panels of a garment?

We always strive for the greatest accuracy when printing and constructing your garments. However, due to unavoidable stretch or movement of the fabric during the stitching process, we cannot guarantee perfect pattern registration across garment seams. We are generally accurate within 2-3mm, which is close enough for most patterns but may show slight issues with detailed geometric patterns.

  • print label option icon

Can I print my own Labels?

Most of our garments now come with printable label space for you to add your own company information and branding. If you would like to sew in your own labels, we also offer Printed Fabric Labels here.

  • Eco friendly Printing

How is your fabric printing eco-friendly?

With environmental consciousness in mind, our fabrics are all printed using completely water-based inks. This means no chemicals or solvents are used. Our heat fixing procedure fixes the colours and prints, avoiding the downsides of steaming, such as excess or contaminated water returning into the waste system. We have one facility where we conduct all the printing, production and fulfilment.

Please note: All the products we provide are handmade to order and so there may be slight variations in all the measurements.
